In Episode 55 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about coding, as it is now included in the new Ontario math Curriculum. Coding is something that not many teachers have had the opportunity to be able to teach their students, especially in the younger years. Chey and Pav thought about the ways in which they are able to start teaching students about coding and programming, when they likely have had no exposure to it.
Chey and Pav tried a few coding activities this past week that don’t require the use of technology, and they found that the range of knowledge with the students was quite vast. They concluded that all students should really be starting their journey into coding without the use of a computer or tablet to start – in that they need to understand the WHY behind the coding to begin. And also, from an equity standpoint, there’s so much disparity between students and their abilities due to the access that students would have to tech.
Chey and Pav introduce Yaritza Villalba, High School Social Studies teacher from Brooklyn, New York, for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. Yaritza talks about the importance of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy with her students, who are, “Overaged and under credited.” Working with older students, Yaritza recognizes the importance of being culturally relevant with teaching.
After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav wrap up by giving a few examples of the coding work they have done with their students, with and without technology, and some of the learning that has arisen from these experiences.
Remember to Inspire, Don’t Require, always be a Humble Servant, and Education Never Dies.
