A Culture of Connection Blog Series

As administrators and educators, we have a responsibility to prioritize connections over compliance with staff and students. In March, Teach Better Team’s Admin Mastermind focused discussions around this topic. Check out the blog posts in this series to learn about strategies to maintain a positive culture in your school and emphasize connections over compliance! And below, check out a poem by Mary Beth Cunat about the importance of connection, voice, and the love of learning.

Connection Over Compliance: Let’s Soar! by Suzanne Rogers

Whatever you have to do without wanting to do,
Energy is drained away from you.
Doing what you love,
And loving what you do,
Gives so much energy
Back to you.
In school, kids jump through teacher hoops
For grades, for rewards, or to avoid trouble.
And teachers jump through district hoops,
The UNFORGIVING testing bubble.
Where is the joy? Where is the fun?
In doing only what must be done,
It zaps us of the love of learning.
WE MUST DO BETTER.
It’s the connection for which
we ALL are yearning.
