Has your feed been lighting up with tiny building blocks? Wordle has been filling up our social media and literary hearts. Whether you love it or hate it, it does have a beautiful Teach Better Green and possibilities for great use in the classroom.
Wordle
Wordle is an online word game (newly owned by the New York Times) based first on guessing a word and then using the remaining letters to finish the puzzle.
What you’ll need:
- Copy of Custom-Made Wordle
Here is an example for Brain Break: Make Your Own Wordle (strivemath.com) - Phone, Computer, or Ipad
- Internet Connection
Prep work:
Making a Wordle for the classroom can be easily done with an online builder. You could choose a vocabulary word from Social Studies, use plot themes from a novel study, or even pick decodable words for primary students.
Students could also choose and word and put it on a paper copy. If the students choose the correct letter they could have their partner color it green with crayons or markers.

How to play:
The online game only allows you to pick words that appear in their database. If you guess a letter correctly and it is in the correct position the letter will turn green. If you guess the letter correctly but it is in the wrong position the letter will turn yellow. If you do not guess the letter correctly it will turn gray. There is a new game every day and you have the option of sharing your puzzle with friends and family or on social media.
