Hey guys, it’s Chad. I was actually at a conference this past weekend and one of the participants in the session I was running asked me or said that they weren’t sure if they could implement mastery or student centered learning because the teachers at the high school and the college level are going to be doing lecture and notes, and this question really bothered me.

So, you know, I wanted to share the answer I gave him with the rest of you, and I get this a lot and I’m not sure why, but for some reason, teachers think that because college professors and some advanced high school teachers lecture all the time, they need to prepare their students by doing the same thing.

Now, the inherent issue with this is that it is well established that lecturing is an ineffective teaching method, and not a good way to teach anything to anyone. Multiple studies exist. If you need to, go look, but lecturing does not work, and one thing I want to leave you with right now, and I want you to focus on is bad teaching tomorrow, a month from now, or four or five years from now, does not make it okay for you to provide bad teaching to your students right now.
